Subaru AWD Transmissions

Subaru has fitted 2 main transmission types into the Impreza and Liberty/Legacy AWD models, both a 5 speed (TY75) and 6 speed (TY85) models.

5MT (TY75)

Fitted to vehicles since 1989 onwards, the TY75 is a 5 speed transmission incorporating both the vehicles front and center differentials within the single unit. Front differentials are a combination of open and helical LSD and center differentials fitted with either a viscous coupling or DCCD (Driver Controlled Center Differential) consisting of a computer controlled electromagnetic clutch pack.

Throughout the years, Subaru have made a number of running changes and revisions to improve the durability and shift feel of the TY75. These changes include the widening of 1st, 2nd and 3rd gears, the introduction of dual cone sychronizers to various gears and the change of synchronizer teeth length and engagement angles to minimise gear pop-out and shift baulking.

PAR Billet Synchroniser Cone The TY75 is often referred to as the "Glass Transmission" in Japan and other parts of the world due do it's low torque capacity and it's tendancy to break gears in lightly and even standard unmodfied vehicles.

A particularly troublesome point in the 5MT TY75 shift mechanism is the 3rd gear synchroniser cone. The shock load exerted from hard shifting, especially if the clutch has not been fully engaged often breaks the legs off or breaks the cone. This can affect shift quality and in extreme cases damage the gears in the transmission if metal fragments are ingested into meshing gears.

6MT (TY85)

Subaru 6MT(TY85) Predomininantly fitted to STI vehicles, the TY-85 was developed to help extract maximum power from the WRX STi’s powerful, albeit more peaky engines. This transmission is similar in layout to the 5MT TY75 with the front and center differentials incorporated within the single unit.

The TY85 is lubricated internally by an oil pump mounted at the rear of the unit which gear driven by the center differential. The lubricant flow rate is governed by both the center differential's speed and built in regulator/pressure relief valve system.

Even though the TY85 transmission's superior torque capacity and extra features are much sought after by owners of 5MT vehicles, the close ratios fitted to earlier models tends to make it unsuitable for modified vehicles with built up engines that have wide power and torque curves. The cost of retrofitting acilliaries is also prohibitive for many vehicle owners.

Subaru 5MT Transmission Solutions

PAR designs and manufactures both synchromesh and dog engagement gearsets for the Subaru AWD 5 speed transmission. There are currently 4 gearset models manufactured to fit the TY75(5MT) including 2 synchromesh engagement (option of helical and straight cut) and 2 dog engagement options and a wide ratio gearset for the TY85(6MT) transmissions. Details of each option follow below.

Subaru 5MT 450hp Synchromesh Engagement - $3,250 AUD (plus GST)

After extensive research and development, PAR released this gearset in 2002 with the optimal balance of strength and refinement in synchromesh engagement style gears available.

Boasting the widest 1st gear on the market with a straight cut configuration and the option of both helical and straight cut gear configuration for 2nd thru 4th gears, these gearsets are rated to a full 400bhp for the tough street machine with large power and torque increases over stock levels.

Features:
- Rated to 450bhp
- Large optimised tooth profiles for every gear to provide maximum strength and reliability
- Straight cut 1st gear for minimal thrust loads when launching at full power. This protects the thrust bearings supporting the transmission shafts from the shock loads experienced during hard launches, especially when using puck type and multi-plate/rigid centre clutch assemblies
- Option of both straight cut and helical cut gears for 2nd~4th gears
- Inclusion of new billet 3rd gear synchroniser cone for maximum reliability and synchroniser performance
- Addition of an uprated synchromesh engagement 5th gear available for customers with high speed applications
- Needle roller bearings used for 3rd, 4th and 5th gears to maximise efficiency and reliability
- Gearset is a direct fitment into the standard factory transmission

Configurations:
- Synchromesh engagement, helical cut gears (2nd~4th, 1st gear is straight cut)
- Synchromesh engagement, straight cut gears (1st~4th)
- Optional synchromesh engagement, helical cut 5th gear
- 1st ~ 2nd gear set also available for drivers who like to launch aggressively in moderately powered vehicles ($1,890 AUD (plus GST))

Ratios:
- 1st: 3.1
- 2nd: 1.92
- 3rd: 1.35
- 4th: 0.964
- 5th: 0.73, 0.82, 0.88, 0.92 (Optional $640 AUD (plus GST))

- No extra cost custom ratios

Subaru 5MT 650hp Synchromesh Engagement - $3,850 AUD (plus GST)

With the advancements in engine tuning technology and increases of modified vehicle's engine outputs rising quickly in power and torque, it became apparent that a new revised gearset would be needed to fulfill the requirement of massive torque capacity, low NVH levels and ease of use for street driven vehicles.

Given a blank sheet to work from, the design and production teams at PAR have used the very latest in design and production technology, techniques and experience to produce a gearset of immense strength and refinement. Boasting the widest gears available to date with 4mm, 3.2mm and 2mm wider gears for 2nd, 3rd and 4th speeds respectively and the refinement of the tried and proven 450bhp 5MT gearset, the new 650bhp 5MT gearset is second to none.

Features:
- Rated to 650bhp
- Large optimised tooth profiles for every gear to provide maximum strength and reliability
- Straight cut 1st gear for minimal thrust loads when launching at full power. This protects the thrust bearings supporting the transmission shafts from the shock loads experienced during hard launches, especially when using puck type and multi-plate/rigid centre clutch assemblies.
- Inclusion of new billet 3rd gear synchroniser cone for maximum reliability and synchroniser performance
- Addition of an uprated synchromesh engagement 5th gear available for customers with high speed applications
